Materials and processes for sheet metal parts

Sheet metal is a comprehensive cold working process for thin metal sheets (usually below 6mm), including shearing, punching/cutting/laminating, folding, welding, riveting, splicing and forming (e.g. car bodies). The distinguishing feature is the consistent thickness of the same part. The products processed through the sheet metal process are called sheet metal parts.

1.The craftsmanship of sheet metal parts refers to the ease of processing of the parts in the process of punching, bending, stretching, welding, etc.

2. Preferred materials and surface treatment

2.1 Preferred material properties, applications and specifications

Our company does not have a special separate specification to force the selection of preferred materials, but in the default process of design there is basically a spontaneous preferred behaviour.

2.1-1Common carbon structural steel - plain plate (Q235)

★Common thicknesses (mm): 0.5, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5

★Common surface treatments: colour zinc plated, blue zinc plated, nickel plated, painted

Q235 is a steel material, the Q stands for the yield of the material and the 235 that follows refers to the yield value of the material, which is around 235. When we design, we usually just write Q235 in the material column of the drawing and do not indicate which grade of steel it is, which is incorrect. Suppliers see that sheet metal parts made of Q235 are generally made of SPCC (cold rolled steel sheet).

2.1-2 Stainless steel sheets SUS304, SUS316 (used for parts that will come into contact with acid and alkaline solutions).

★ Commonly used thickness: 0.5, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 2.0.

★ Common surface treatment: usually do not do surface treatment if there is a special need to recommend the use of surface treatment of stainless steel materials. Such as: SUS304 HL (straightening), SUS304 BA (matte), SUS304 Mirror (mirror).

2.1-3 Aluminium sheets: A1100 (pure aluminium), A5052 (alloy aluminium), 6061 (alloy aluminium)

★Commonly used thickness: 1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 2.0.

★Common surface treatments: brushed oxidation (blackened, whitened), sandblasted oxidation (not recommended, single-sided sandblasting is easy to deform), powder coating. If the part requires electrical conductivity, it is necessary to specify in the technical requirements that the conductive oxidation is a chemical oxidation, the colour is light yellow.

2.1-4 Copper plate: H62

★ Common thicknesses: 0.3, 0.5, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 2.0.

★ Common surface treatment: nickel plated, blackened and oxidized, no treatment.

3 Commonly used processing techniques

3.1 Sheet metal parts processing process

The process flow of CNC punching and CNC bending equipment for processing sheet metal parts is as follows.

钣金件工艺

Maxswall company customized all kinds of sheet metal parts, the core processing like stamping, CNC bending, welding, tapping are controlled in the our own factory, we can guarantee the best support on delivery and the quality control  for our customers. In addition, we are one-stop supplying of various hardware stamping parts, CNC machining parts, die-casting parts, nameplates, etc. To provide a one-stop customized services, which is better to save your communication time and cost.
